Year Introduction
This year I was in the Jazz Band and the String Orchestra. Now I have been in Jazz Band for two years and String Orchestra for three years. Both classes are instructed by Allison McIvor, the band director for San Marin High School. I also participated in the Musical Tech and took private lessons for piano.
Jazz Band is a class in the regular 1st-7th period schedule, that happened during 7th period, and we meet four times a week. This is just one of the groups in the Jazz Program at San Marin High School. There is also another Jazz Band, a Jazz Combo, a Jazz choir, and each perform and practice their own music. I played the trombone in this class, and typically the fourth part. In this class we played many different styles of jazz and learned about music theory. We had a few concerts to show an audience, including family and friends, what we had been practicing. Many of these concerts were held at Trek Winery due to the fact that our previous stage had been destroyed for reconstruction. All of the jazz groups attend jazz festivals every so often. These jazz festivals were great opportunities for us to meet professional jazz musicians, listen to other skilled jazz musicians live, and receive professional feedback from other jazz instructors and musicians.
String Orchestra is an after school class that is considered an eighth or a ninth period, and it meets twice a week. There are also other after school music classes such as Rock Band and Show Choir. This group is considered to be one of the classical groups since we often play more classical pieces. The classical group also has Concert Band and Concert Choir. In this class I played the violin, and I often played either the third part of the second part. The classical concerts happened at the Presbyterian Church since there was no stage to perform on.
